I attempt to invoke different kinds of speculation, including science-fiction, fantasy, and extraordinary happenings, lush visual narratives that are pleasing to the eye because they are simply impossible, like the Hoover dam flowing out from a woman or the George Washington Bridge going into the body itself. There’s something exhilarating about how fantastical these moments are, traveling into uncharted territory and enchantment. All of the women dwarf the engineered structure they are fusing with, "The Rainbow Highway” is not only gaining access to the engineered structure but also taking pleasure in the cars and people who flow through her. It’s a transmutation of structural institutions of oppressive power —the state, medicine, the rocket industry —into a kind of erotic empowerment that exudes from the body. Drawing on Afro-futurism and Sci-fi inspiration, these Utopic environments are important because they come from a real sense of hope, a prospect and possibility that many present realities can actively change. The definition of utopia is a sort of impractical, idealistic scenario, I create these environments where you are safe, empowered, and fearless.
