"LUX MEDICINA remix" By Lotte Karlsen

"UPDATE:
 In Latin, LUX means light and MEDICINA is medicine. Created during the Covid19 pandemic, the LUX MEDICINA sculpture series is a response to the lighter side of our global crisis. Having opened 2020 in my darkest hour, figuratively on my hands and knees - I paradoxically crawled into lockdown with a sense of great relief and gratitude. This worldwide pause afforded me the opportunity to just be and commence a necessary healing process. The universe is about balance and without darkness we would not know light. Just as the forces of light and darkness work hand in hand within the greater Universe, I found the brightest light within me by knowing my darkness, my shadow.
 

The LUX MEDICINA remix #01 is a digital rework of this sculpture series. The flowing pixelated data shows a shimmering shower of tear-shaped crystals – here I offer a glimpse of my vulnerability, fragility, my light, my love. In the poetics of the digital space, and the luminous, radiant colour signatures embedded in the subtle contours of crystals, I present viewers a reflection of my deep and personal journey into self-expansion."

Norwegian multidisciplinary artist Lotte Karlsen is based in Manchester, UK. Sculptural works, site-specific installations and community initiatives have allowed Karlsen to fluidly translate her conceptual feminism into praxis. Photography likewise plays a key role in effectively translating her impact and intent. Originally trained as a glass blower, in recent years Lotte has returned to her first and signature medium - experimenting with glass and glass with mixed media, including digital formats.
