"A Smooth Sea Never Made a Skilled Sailor" By Daryl Myntia
This painting was designed and created in the middle of this pandemic after witnessing a number of heinous murders against the Black community. I thought about different war tactics and ways martial arts has been used to liberate people. My gymnastics background and my family ties to Tai Chi inspired this painting as I researched other African art forms like Engolo and Capoeira. I wanted to create a liberated heroic woman whose hair becomes a part of her superpower as I thought about the many women throughout history who have helped free our communities.
