"Remant 1702" By Kiley Ames
Historical constructs, perceptions and personal experiences interweave to create ambiguity around the complicated narrative of human history. It is not made up of a single continuous line of facts, but rather scattered fragments that continuously gather throughout history. Much of my work is formed from how I view fragmentation and fragments, which are defined as “isolated and incomplete parts of something.” Like history, these fragments can be edited, re-written, omitted, and re-interpreted to create one’s perception of reality. There is no beginning or end with these fragmentations, there is just interaction and exchange. The dense flecks of color populating the surface, light against dark, muted against vivid, come together to ultimately create an image simultaneously unified and disparate. The Remnant Series combine elements existing in a state of reality with cohesion and connectedness, to the precariousness and imbalance within one’s own self and in relation to others.
